Purpose
- Approval or rejection and payment of claims against the state or a state employee.
- Resolve local budget protests.

Administration Duties
Monthly Meetings
- Held first Monday of each month
- Agenda distributed to board members, special assistant attorney general, Department of Transportation Claims Management Division, General Services, Human Services
- Agenda posted in Governor's Office
- Attorney General's Office distributes the list of claims and the corresponding recommendations to Board Members
- State Appeal Board prepares list of administrative actions to provide to board members
- Outdated warrants reissued
- 28E Agreement listing from Department of Transportation, (U of I, ISU, UNI and UIHC), and Department of General Services
- Settlements and judgments paid by general fund and Department of Transportation (DOT)
- Interdepartmental claims
- Administrative claims to be ratified
Audit
- Conducted yearly (fall) by an outside firm
- Information provided:
- Warrant registers
- Minutes
- I/3 System
- Balance sheet
- CAFR due September 30 of each year
Legislative Reports
- Due second day of the session (supplemental listings of denied claims are also sent in February, March and possibly April)
- Reports consist of the following:
- Denied general claims
- Approved tort claims
o Settlements and judgments paid by General Fund
- Settlements and judgments paid by DOT
- Distribution of Reports
- Five copies to the Senate (Claims Committee)
- Five copies to the House (Claims Committee)
- Claims Committee acts upon denied general claims
- If approved, money is appropriated and the legislature pays the claims.
- If denied, letter sent to claimant advising of their decision.
